You guys, I think I was right on the money with predicting how much the tomato plants would grow within the past week. Here’s last week’s picture:

Tomato Chronicles Week 1

And here is this week’s:

Tomato Chronicles Week 2

In fact, I think I may have overestimated last week’s plant by a bit. I went out with an actual measuring stick this morning and the main trunk of the plant is around the 14 inches I predicted. However judging by the support stick in the background I think last week was closer to 8 inches rather than the 10 inches I had guesstimated. Here is the side by side comparison:

Week 2 Comparison

The angle of the pictures is a little different but I adjusted the images so that Joshua is the same size in both. I’m honestly always blown away by how much has happened in the last week. The greenhouse really is turning into a jungle already!

Tomato Chronicles Week 2 Jungle

There was of course a fair bit of primping to be done. All the plantlings had at least a few leaves that needed to be pinched back.

Growth to be Pinched 2

And some had grown some truly massive leaves. I almost felt bad plucking them away since so much energy must have gone into growing them in the first place. I have a bad habit of anthropomorphizing things and the garden is no different for me there. It’s a good thing my mother-in-law didn’t ask me to do any weeding. I don’t think I could have stood the heartbreak…

Growth to be Pinched

But the biggest surprise update of The Tomato Chronicles is that we’re already getting our first tomato blossoms! My mother-in-law had already sent a message through the Impish Husband that we could expect to see some flowers soon. I think she was afraid that the blossoms would become the unintended victims of my overenthusiastic pinching. I don’t know whether to be insulted or surprised by how well she knows both me and her garden.

First Tomato Blossoms

By next week we’ll be seeing some pretty yellow tomato blossoms popping up. At this rate it won’t be long before we get our first tomato! The Impish Husband thinks we’ll be harvesting within three weeks. I think it’ll be closer to five. What do you guys think?

For those of you who might have missed it, you can catch up on last week’s inaugural post of The Tomato Chronicles here.
