You may suddenly find yourself with the makings of a traditional Austrian Jause, i.e. a ridiculously awesome Austrian snack slash meal.

Jause!

 
My grandma hooked us up with some goodies this last weekend and the Impish Husband and I decided to share our bounty with our German friends over our first official dinner invitation at our new house. Awesomeness all around! 🙂

 
There were three kinds of Speck and two kinds of sausage that we rounded out with some hard boiled eggs, Jarlsberg cheese, red peppers, radishes, and tomatoes. (Please ignore the naked outlet in the back. The house, especially the dining room, is still very much a work in progress).

 

 
I was also super excited about my last minute improvised cheese plate. We had some slate out behind the house that the Impish Husband dug out for me and gave a good scrubbing to. No worries, the cheese is still sitting on a bit of parchment paper so no risk of germs or any other residual ick transferring to it.

 

 
You can’t see it in any of the pictures here but my wonderful mother-in-law also baked us some absurdly yummy German style (Czech style? Austrian style?) dark bread, because sandwich bread just won’t cut it for a Jause! Oh and pickles! There were lots of Polish pickles.

 
As I said, this was our first time having friends over for dinner so there were still some things that needed to be improvised but overall it was a lovely evening.

 

 
I can’t think of any better way to kick off what will hopefully be the first of many dinners in our new home.
